Since purchasing our first Galah Cockatoo 14 years ago all of our parrots have been confined to indoor life. Although their indoor enclosure is spacious it lacks natural daylight. The enclosure is lit with UV lamps and sun tubes, this however this was only making the best of a bad situation. Although these modern day artificial lamps are good, they are far from the natural spectrum of the outside world.
Three months ago we decided it was time to expand our Galah enclosure. We wanted them to have access to both inside and outside through a trap door system. Our aim was to give the parrots the option of maximum summer daylight, but also providing them with warm and shelter during the winter months. We constructed a 3mtr (10ft) by 3mtr concrete block enclosure. The block work makes up three sides leaving the front section open. For easy cleaning the block walls were covered using 600mm (24”) by 600mm high gloss black ceramic tiles. The base is also concrete with a 6inch central drain, clean recycled water is fed from a 5000ltr (1100gal) per hr waterfall, this can be used for bathing and drinking. The roof will be made up of three 1mtr by 3 mtr panes of glass. During the winter cold spells heating will be provided by the 1800mm (6ft) radiator.
