We currently have two baby Galahs, Chick one hatched 4th March 2010 shortly followed by chick two that hatched 7th March.

Track records have proved these parents can only cope with just the one chick.

Therefore as you can see from the nest box images these parents are looking after only one chick.

Chick number two we are raising with the help of an incubator.

If all goes well and the chicks reach an age of around 13 weeks this baby will be offered for sale.

Babies will only be released when they are fully weaned and feeding by themselves.

We have seven Galah Cockatoos all are English breed.

Four of them have closed leg rings and three of them have no leg rings.

Those with closed rings would suggest they were all artificially incubated from an egg,

a closed ring can only be placed over the foot within the first 2 to 3 weeks after the chick has hatched.

A parrot without a closed leg ring would suggest the chick remained with its natural parents for several weeks after the eyes opened. In my experience a close rung parrot is too humanised and can be VERY demanding, wanting to always be playing with its surrogate parent, YOU!

This sounds like fun but imagine this scenario. Your entertaining guests at home, your pet parrot is in his/her cage. You’re paying him no attention because it’s your time now. Wrong!

He wants part of the action and on occasions will scream and shout until you give in and let him out.

Personally in my opinion a hand reared chick that has spent time with its natural parent makes for a much better and manageable companion.

For this reason I intend to hand rear my babies from around 4 weeks old.

After reading this if you are still considering purchasing a baby parrot you must do your home work first.

We have conditions before any baby parrot is released to his/her new home.

We need to be certain that the cage you have meets our minimum size requirements of 60cms- 80cms by 110cms high. We insist when you visit us you handle the bird and feel comfortable around parrots.

We will make a point of keeping in touch with new owners for a while to be sure everything is going smoothly,

Your new baby will come with one week’s supply of food, and information where food can be purchased.

Your baby will be supplied with his/her own birth certificate and instructions on how to care for your new family member.

Aged 30 days old it is important to handle babies regular to ensure they remain comfortable with human contact.

Baby now returned to nest box and reunited with his parents.

Both parents fed baby several more times throughout the day.
